The 2017/18 Premier League champions are looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, as they strive to compete on all fronts once again.
According to the Daily Mirror, the Manchester side has contacted Los Blancos to enquire about the availability of Croatia international Mateo Kovacic.
The 24-year-old is said to have had enough of the lack of game time he has been getting in Madrid, and is believed to be ready to move elsewhere.
It has been suggested that Pep Guardiola sees the midfielder as a potential alternative to Jorginho should they end up missing out on the Napoli star in the coming months.
Apparently, City agreed personal terms with Brazil-born Italy international weeks ago, but the club is struggling to negotiate a fee with the Italian club.
The Croatian is not the only midfielder Guardiola is said to be keeping a close eye on, however – the Spaniard is also said to be interested in Miralem Pjanic of Juventus and Southampton's Mario Lemina.
Kovacic has made 109 appearances for Real since joining the club in 2015, scoring three goals and assisting a further eight strikes.
