Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has reportedly beaten Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to a £35 million (R590 million) signing.
According to Arab News, the Citizens have secured Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred's signature, and the deal could be confirmed in the coming days.
Guardiola, who is said to be a big admirer of the 24-year-old, apparently sees the Brazilian as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, who turns 33 in May.
United, however, are also said to be considering the Brazil international as somebody who could come in for the ageing Michael Carrick and/or Marouane Fellaini, who is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of this season.
It has been suggested that Shakhtar are willing to sell Fred in this window if their price for him is met, otherwise they will only allow him to leave at the end of the season.
The Ukrainian side are looking to progress deep into the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, and believe they can only do that if they able to keep their best players.
Fred has made 24 appearances for Shakhtar so far this season, scoring two goals and assisting four further strikes.
