The Portuguese manager is reportedly aware of the current situation around Paul Pogba and his team's shortcomings in midfield, with The Guardian reporting that Toni Kroos and Isco could be the missing pieces to United's puzzle.

Both players have been long-term targets for the Red Devils, who tried to sign Isco in 2012 and Kroos two years later. United are understood to be prepared to pay £135 million (R2.21 billion) for the Spanish playmaker but Mourinho believes goalkeeper David de Gea could be used as a trump card in a swap deal.

Los Blancos came close to signing the shot-stopper in 2015, but the deal collapsed at the last minute. However, De Gea has remained a target for the Spanish giants, and it is believed they are once again keen to sign him.

Amid rumours of a major overhaul at the Santiago Bernabeu in the next window, Raphael Varane has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford. Mourinho gave the Frenchman his Madrid debut during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is believed to be a huge admirer of the centre back.
