Having already improved his Manchester United squad with two new signings, Jose Mourinho has now been linked with a shock player.
English midfielder Jack Wilshere announced this week that he will leave Arsenal once his contract expires at the end of this month, following discussions with Unai Emery about his future.
The 26-year-old has insisted that he made his decision for footballing reasons, suggesting that the new manager might not have guaranteed him an important role in his plans for the 2018/19 season.
Many clubs, including Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as Fenerbahce and Inter Milan, are said to be interested in the player, but United have now seemingly emerged as favourites for his signature.
Mourinho is said to be interested in the midfielder, who was, surprisingly to some, left out of England's 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
According to Manchester Evening News, Brazil international Fred was signed to replace the now-retired Michael Carrick, and with Marouane Fellaini also expected to leave the Red Devils, Wilshere is apparently being lined up to bolster the club's midfield department.
A bonus for United would be that the Englishman is a free agent, following two seasons of the club spending big money on signings such as Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Nemanja Matic.
