Before the 2020/21 campaign kicked off, the Red Devils failed to agree a fee with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Jadon Sancho, with the Bundesliga side understood to be holding out for £108 million (R2.24 billion) at the time.
United believed that amount was too much for the England international, and although BVB are seemingly willing to lower their asking price for the player in the upcoming window, the Premier League giants have now identified a cheaper alternative, according to the Daily Telegraph.
It is claimed the Manchester club is now after Sporting Lisbon winger Pedro Goncalves. The 22-year-old joined Sporting from Familicao for just €6.5 million (R115 million) ahead of the current campaign and has impressed for the Liga NOS leaders since, scoring 15 times in 21 league appearances.
Goncalves also reportedly has a release clause of just £51.7 million (R1 billion), making him a lot more affordable than Sancho.
United have a good relationship with the Portuguese side, having previously signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Bruno Fernandes from Sporting.
