The Portuguese tactician has already lured Alexis Sanchez, who had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, to United in this window.

However, Mourinho's January shopping might not be finished as he is said to be preparing to sign another midfielder.

According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho is keen to lure Real's Mateo Kovacic to England, with the player having fallen down the pecking order under Zinedine Zidane.

The 23-year-old impressed for Los Blancos last season, but has struggled to find form in 2017/18, and has featured in only 169 minutes of LaLiga action in this campaign so far.

Mourinho reportedly wants to sign the Croatian as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who is set to retire at the end of the season.

However, Inter Milan – Kovacic's previous club – are also interested in taking the midfielder back to Serie A, according to reports in Italy.

The player could be willing to leave Zidane's side with a view to gaining more playing time in order to secure his spot in Croatia's 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
