Reports: Jose Mourinho Chasing FC Barcelona Star, "Calls" Him Personally

Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to lure an FC Barcelona star to Manchester United, and apparently "calls" him personally on a regular basis.

The United boss wants to improve his defence for the coming season, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones failing to fully convince him of their prowess this campaign.

While Eric Bailly was injured for large parts of the season, Mourinho reportedly sees him as his first choice centre back and wants to add a better partner for him.

Spanish publication Sport has reported that the Portuguese has identified Samuel Umtiti as the perfect addition for the English giants, and that the Red Devils would be prepared to match his €60 million (R879 million) release clause.

In addition, United would reportedly offer the French defender more than double of his current €4 million (R59 million) annual salary.

The report suggested that the English club's bosses are prepared to give Umtiti a salary of €9 million (R132 million) a year, and the player is "letting himself be loved by Mourinho".

His agent and brother, Yannick Umtiti, is believed to be "in constant" contact with United's representatives, and Mourinho, who reportedly often calls the left-footed centre back personally, has asked the player's France teammates Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial to help lure him to Old Trafford.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are eager to extend Umtiti's contract before the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in order to fend off any interest and raise his buyout clause.

However, it has been reported that the Catalan giants want to pay him less than United's €9 million annual salary offer – if they matched it, he would be one of the highest paid players at the Camp Nou.

Umtiti must just negotiate with Barca for an improved package. There's really no need for him to move now. He's already with the winning team.

Mourinho must also give Luke Shaw a chance to show up, he is a good player and he must put Ashley Young aside on that leftback

Manchester United have became delusional in recent years, what makes them think they can sign a player of this calibre? I think it's the side effects of losing too much.
