Reports: Former Chelsea & Real Star Handed Prison Sentence

A former Chelsea and Real Madrid star has reportedly been handed a prison sentence for tax fraud in Spain.

According to Sky Sports News, Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho has been sentenced to seven months in prison and fined €142,882 for tax fraud.

However, the central defender is unlikely to spend time in prison as Spanish law says that any sentence under two years for a non-violent crime rarely requires a defendant, without previous convictions, to serve time in prison.

Carvalho was found guilty of hiding income from image rights in 2011 and 2012 while playing for Los Blancos, avoiding €545,981 in tax.

The 39-year-old, who now plays in the Chinese Super League, paid the the amount and pleaded guilty to the charges, which helped reduce his sentence.

Carvalho is not the first footballer to be punished for tax fraud, as Lionel Messi was found guilty of defrauding the Spanish state of €4.2 million and was handed a jail sentence of 21 months in 2016.
