The Red Devils, who spent more than £150 million (R2.48 billion) on signings in 2017/18, ended second in the English top flight, and failed to lift the FA Cup after losing 1-0 to London side Chelsea in the final.
According to the Daily Mirror, there are five players Mourinho needs to sign if United are to challenge next season – Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara, Tottenham Hotspur duo Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, and Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos.
It has been suggested that it is in defence where the Portuguese tactician must spend the most money, with the Daily Mirror believing a top centre-back partner, Alderweireld being their choice, must be bought for Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly.
Although Ashley Young has rarely put a foot wrong this season, the Old Trafford side is in need of a natural, first-choice left-back. With Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw not making the cut, they are expected to be sold, and Danny Rose has been heavily linked with a switch to Manchester.
In midfield, Mourinho will be losing veteran Michael Carrick and potentially Belgium international Marouane Fellaini. The Englishman will join his manager's coaching staff in the new season, while the Belgian has apparently not been able to agree a new contract with the Red Devils. Thiago and Kroos would be top replacements for the pair, and both players have been linked with the English club before.
The right-wing position is another that has been a problem area for United, with many failing to convince in the role, and the Daily Mirror believes Real's Bale is the perfect candidate for the spot.
