The Belgian central defender left the Citizens at the end of 2018/2019 to join Anderlecht as player/coach this season.
The Sun have now reported that Kompany was offered the chance to return to the Etihad as Guardiola's right-hand man after Mikel Arteta had left to join Arsenal in December 2019.
It is now being reported that the Belgian rejected the manager's offer despite holding talks over the vacated role.
The report added that Kompany was still looking to play football while coaching, an issue he felt would not be available to him at the Manchester outfit.
Kompany still has two years left on his current contract at Anderlecht, who were also reportedly fined earlier in the campaign for hiring the Belgian defender who did not have a UEFA Pro licence.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has also been linked the vacant job at the Etihad as he is currently managing Real Sociedad B in the Segunda Division.
