The Portuguese tactician has already shown five younger players the exit door – Donald Love, Patrick McNair and Tyler Blackett were sold, while Adnan Januzaj and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson secured loan deals.

The 53-year-old is apparently targeting at least one more arrival before the window closes, but first needs to sell some of the club's heavy earners.

According to the Daily Mirror, Marcos Rojo, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phil Jones and Matteo Darmian will all be allowed to leave.

Schweinsteiger and Rojo, in particular, have apparently been deemed surplus to requirements, but their sale is proving to be difficult, with both of them among the higher earners at Old Trafford.

The retired Germany captain is understood earn £200 000 (R3.6 million) a week, and would reportedly be prepared to see out his two-year contract, despite being dropped to the club's U21 side.

If he does indeed see out the remainder of his contract, it would apparently cost United £17 million (R303 million).
