African Star Saves Liverpool, Man City Reclaim Top Spot

Leeds United 0-4 Manchester City

Manchester City reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after defeating Leeds United 4-0 at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva were named on the bench after Tuesday's clash against Real Madrid, as Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish started in the City attack.

Leeds were nearly gifted the opening goal when Joao Cancelo's untimely slip allowed Rodrigo to race through no goal, however the striker delayed his shot and allowed City's defenders to get back and clear.

The home side were made to pay for that miss in the 13th minute when Phil Foden's free-kick found Rodri, who sent a glancing header into the far corner.

Leeds, meanwhile, did look lively as the first half went on but they struggled to carve out any clear-cut openings at Ederson's goal for most of the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts were dealt a blow just before the halftime break when the versatile Stuart Dallas was stretchered off after a challenge from Grealish. He was replaced by Daniel James.

However, the visitors doubled their advantage eight minutes after the restart when Ruben Dias' knock-down found Nathan Ake who volleyed home from three yards out.

Leeds nearly pulled a goal back with 20 minutes left on the clock after Raphinha managed to weave his way into the box, but the Brazilian was denied by an important block by Ruben Dias.

City wrapped up the victory with 13 minutes left on the clock as Foden turned provider once again to play in Gabriel Jesus, who took one touch before firing into the far corner, before Fernandinho bagged the fourth goal in second-half stoppage time with a first-time strike from distance.

Newcastle United 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool were made to work hard for a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United to move top of the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes from the win over Benfica, as Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara dropped to the bench.

Despite the flurry of changes, the Reds dominated possession in the early stages as Diogo Jota and Naby Keita went close with shots in the opening 10 minutes.

Klopp's charges got the breakthrough on 19 minutes when Jota slipped in Keita, who showed great composure to dummy the goalkeper before firing into the back of the net.

The Magpies, meanwhile, barley had a touch of the ball in the first half but they had the ball in the back of the net on 37 minutes through Miguel Almiron, but the offside flag was raised.

Liverpool nearly bagged a second goal just before the break when Henderson's cross found Jota's head, but Newcastle goalkeeper Matt Dubravka produced fine save to tip over the crossbar.

Newcastle came out with more attacking approach in the second half but struggled to carve out any openings in the final third, although Sadio Mane squandered a big chance on the hour mark at the other end.

That proved to be the final moment for Mane, who was replaced by Salah for the final 20 minutes while Fabinho replaced Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Chris Wood had a big chance to get Newcastle back on level terms soon after being slipped through on goal but was he denied by Allisson, who also kept out Bruno Guimaraes.

That proved to be the final opening of the half for the Magpies as Klopp's charges secured maximum points to move temporarily, with Manchester City facing Leeds United later this evening.
