The Gunners made three alterations from their win over Manchester United, as they recalled Takehero Tomiyasu, Rob Holding and Gabriel Martinelli while West Ham rested Michail Antonio on the bench.
There was not much separating the sides in the early stages and the game came to life just after the half-hour mark, as the Hammers forced issues.
Despite their resurgence, David Moyes' charges went behind seven minutes from the half-time break after Holding guided Bukayo Saka's cross into the open far corner.
However, the Hammers regained their ascendancy and Jarrod Bowen levelled matters on the stroke of half-time with a lovely low finish from Vladimir Coufal's cross that took a deflection and got away from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and into the bottom corner.
Mikel Arteta's troops were more assertive coming from the half-time break and Gabriel restored their lead nine minutes into the second stanza with a free header at the back post from Saka's cross that was fumbled by shot-stopper, formerly with Arsenal, Lukasz Fabianski.
West Ham continued to back-pedal under pressure from the Gunners and Moyes eventually brought on Antonio 20 minutes before time in place of Manuel Lanzini in an attacking change.
However, Eddie Nketiah had a big chance to put the game to bed for Arsenal ten minutes later after he drifted through on goal from a counter-attack but his curling shot missed the far post by a whisker wide.
West Ham had the urgency going forward in the dying minutes but they could not get around Arsenal's deep block and Arteta's men held on and leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur in fourth spot on the log.
