United made two changes, with Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic making their way into the team, with Dan James and Scott McTominay missing out while Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho were on the bench. Southampton remained unchanged.
The Red Devils came close in the seventh minute. Bruno Fernandes delivered a free-kick in from the right, which Pogba headed onto the crossbar with the rebounding falling the way of Martial, but his shot was scuffed and Mohammed Salisu cleared it off the line.
The Saints took the lead on the half-hour mark. Danny Stephens dispossessed Fernandes and Southampton broke, with Adam Armstrong, Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo passing it between themselves on the edge of the box before Adams then struck a low shot towards goal, which took a big deflection off Fred, which bamboozled David de Gea and flew into the bottom right corner of the net.
Shortly before half-time, Matic headed towards goal from Luke Shaw's corner but Saints shot-stopper Alex McCarthy made a good save with Paul Pogba waiting to pounce.
And Pogba, who was looking in fine form as he has been in recent weeks, made another assist to add to his array last week when he teed up Mason Greenwood after a neat bit of interplay with Fernandes on the edge of the box and Greenwood struck it first time with the ball going through the legs of McCarthy on its way in.
It was turning into another masterclass from the French World Cup winner when he did superbly to open up space for himself despite the close attentions of several Saints defenders before striking towards the bottom right corner of the net but it went narrowly wide.
Greenwood should have done better in the 65th minute when he headed onto the roof of the net from Sancho's delivery after he was played in by a superb diagonal from Shaw.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's side had a big opportunity to restore their lead about ten minutes later when United were dispossessed in their own half and a through ball got Armstrong clear on goal, who had only De Gea to beat but the Spanish keeper made a brilliant save to thwart him as the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
