Manchester United failed to reclaim top spot in the Premier League after suffering a shock 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Wednesday night.
Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial were recalled to the side, as Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani dropped to the bench while Axel Tuanzebe replaced Eric Bailly.
The hosts should have been ahead after 11 minutes when Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross found its way to Marcus Rashford, who steered his effort inches wide of the upright.
Like so many games this season, United conceded first as Kean Bryan put the Blades ahead on 23 minutes with a close-range header for his first goal at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had the ball in the back of the net seven minutes later, but Martial's finish was ruled out after Harry Maguire's foul on Sheffield goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
After failing to pull a gaol back in the first half, the hosts went close five minutes after the break when Mason Greenwood dragged his effort wide after being played in by Fernandes.
The hosts were not to be denied on 63 minutes when Maguire sent a fine header into the bottom corner off Alex Telles' corner against his former side.
With United pushing for a go-ahead goal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer introduced Cavani for Greenwood as the game entered the final 20 minutes with momentum on their side.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead on 74 minutes as the hosts' failure to close down allowed Olivier Burke to unleash a strike that a took a big deflection off Tuanzebe.
The hosts threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but Sheffield closed up shop and held on to claim a vital win.
