Man United made five changes from the last-gasp win over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba were rested on the bench, while Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fred were all recalled, with Luke Shaw returning from injury.
After a lively opening, Cavani came close for the hosts in the 21st minute with a sharp header inside the box that produced a good save from shot-stopper Jordan Pickford.
The game was there for the taking with chances on transitions and Demarai Gray had a wonderful opportunity for Everton in the 33rd minute with a strike from the edge of the box that forced a save out of goalkeeper David de Gea.
Martial eventually broke the deadlock for the Red Devils just before the half-time break with a first-time strike on the blindside after a through ball by Bruno Fernandes, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges went to the half-time interval with a goal to the good.
The opening exchanges of the second stanza were not producing goal-mouth action and Solskjaer upped the ante with a double change just before the hour-mark, as Ronaldo came on for Cavani and Jadon Sancho replaced Martial,.
Man United were squeezing Rafael Benitez's troops in their own half looking for an insurance goal but they were caught on a counter-attack, as Andros Townsend levelled matters for the visitors in the 65th minute with a low strike past the helpless De Gea after a through ball by Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Ronaldo had a chance to restore the lead for the Red Devils in the last quarter of an hour after a through ball by his fellow substitute Sancho but he flashed his diagonal strike narrowly wide just after turning inside the box.
Yerry Mina thought he had tapped home the winner for Everton in the last four minutes after a pass from Davies, but the goal was chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a marginal offside.
Sancho had a good chance to seal the deal for the United in the last minute after a back-heel by Ronaldo gave him a clear sight of goal unmarked at the back post but he fired a tame shot at Pickford as then encouter ended all square.
