Chelsea Put Man City's Title Celebrations On Ice

Manchester City's title celebrations were put on ice for another day after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the Etihad on Saturday night.

Premier League

Result: Manchester City 1-2 Chelsea

Date: 08 May 2021

Venue: Etihad

Ederson and Ruben Dias were the only two players to retain their place from the win over Paris Saint-Germain, while Hakim Ziyech, Billy Gilmour and Christian Pulisic were among the chances for the Blues.

The hosts managed to carve out the first opening on 17 minutes when Rodri picked up a loose ball before seeing his powerful strike deflected just wide of the target.

Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net in the 32nd minute when Timo Werner turned home Marcos Alonso's cross at the far post, but the strike was chalked off for an offside on the German.

The opening goal did arrive just before the break, with the returning Raheem Sterling slotting into an empty net after some good work by Gabriel Jesus, who won possession off Andreas Christensen.

City were afforded the chance to bag a second minutes later when Gilmour brought down Jesus in the box, but Sergio Aguero saw his spot-kick saved by Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The hosts were made to pay for that miss as Chelsea would draw level on 63 minutes, with Hakim Ziyech finding the bottom corner with a powerful volley from the edge of the box.

Guardiola responded with a double change after that as Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan replaced Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres for the final 20 minutes.

With time running out, Alonso bagged the winning goal in the 92nd minute as the full-back got in the box to turn home Werner's cross to cement fourth spot for the Blues.

If Manchester United lose to Aston Villa on Sunday afternooon, the Citizens will be crowned champions for a fifth time.
