Wasteful Man Utd Reclaim Second Spot

Premier League

Result: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United

Date: 14 March 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United reclaimed their second spot in the Premier League table after edging West Ham United 1-0 on Sunday evening.

Man United made four changes from the draw against AC Milan, as Marcus Rashford returned from injury alongside recalls for Fred, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw while Jesse Lingard, on loan at West Ham, was barred from playing against his parent club.

After a frantic start, Rashford had a good chance to break the deadlock for the hosts in the 24th minute after getting on the end cross by Mason Greenwood but he guided his header wide at the far post.

Greenwood had a clear-cut chance for the Red Devils eight minutes before the break after going through on goal but his low curling effort was tipped into the outside of the post by shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski.

The Hammers were struggling to get out of their half in the closing phase of the first stanza but they defended well enough to keep the score goalless going to the break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges got the breakthrough eight minutes from the break after Scott McTominay's header at the near post from a corner took a deflection off Craig Dawson's head and went into the back of his own net.

Bruno Fernandes came close to making it 2-0 for United on the hour-mark after launching a rocket from just outside the box but his low powerful drive was brilliantly saved by Fabianski.

West Ham were vulnerable to counter-attacks in the closing phase, sending numbers forward and Greenwood was unlucky not to double the lead for the Red Devils in the last 13 minutes after rattling the upright with only Fabianski to beat.

The game was still on the edge in the closing minutes but United managed to hold on to reclaim their second position on the log, 14 points behind leaders Manchester City while the Hammers remain in fifth place.
