Result: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United
Date: 17 January 2021
Manchester United remain three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after the two sides drew 0-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening.
The Reds brought back the big guns after an FA Cup win over an inexperienced Aston Villa, with Xherdan Shaqiri making his first league start of the season while United brought back Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay and Fred.
Liverpool had the first chance at goal in the 17th minute after Roberto Firmino was teed up by Shaqiri on the edge of the box but his left-footed strike missed wide.
Bruno Fernandes came the closest to breaking the deadlock for the Red Devils ten minutes before the break with a curling free-kick towards the top corner that missed narrowly wide.
After a scoreless first half, the encounter was opening up in the early stages of the second stanza but the sides were not clinical in front of goal.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded with the first change for United on the hour-mark after taking off Anthony Martial for Edinson Cavani while Jurgen Klopp waited until the last quarter of an hour to make his first change, with Curtis Jones coming on for Shaqiri.
It was end to end stuff immediately after that, as the Reds shot-stopper Alisson made a great save with his foot to deny Fernandes before goalkeeper David De Gea also punched away a powerful drive from Alcantara.
The game was there for the taking for either side in the closing minutes, as Paul Pogba was denied a late winner after firing straight at Alission in the box as the encounter finished goalless.
