Result: Chelsea 2-0 Burnley
Date: 31 January 2021
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel got the first win of his tenure with a 2-0 victory over Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Chelsea made four changes to their starting line-up, with Marco Alonso, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner all coming into the side, with Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Olivier Giroud dropping to the bench, while Hakim Ziyech also missed out.
Sean Dyche made just two changes to his team that beat Aston Villa in midweek, with Josh Brownhill and Jay Rodriguez dropping out and they have been replaced by Jack Cork and Matej Vydra.
In the eighth minute, Chelsea produced a lovely move with Werner feeding Mount on the edge of the penalty area and he found a little bit of space and tried to curl the ball into the top right corner. However, he got too much on it and it flew high over the Burnley goal.
Nick Pope was being kept busy. After keeping out a drilled attempt by Timo Werner, the Burnley keeper was down to collect Mateo Kovacic's shot. Moments later, another big chance came Chelsea's way but Mount got it wrong as his attempted curler ballooned over.
The Blues took the lead in the 40th minute through captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who beat Pope for pace and power following a lovely lay-off by Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Shortly before the hour mark, Callum Hudson-Odoi, who looked lively throughout struck the post with a shot which took a heavy deflection.
Hudson-Odoi made another excellent burst down the right and he found Christian Pulisic who should have scored but scuffed wide.
Tuchel's side grabbed their second in the 83rd minute to put the game to bed. Alonso marked his first start since September with a breathtaking finish. He was on the edge of the six yard area when he chested the ball on to his knee and turned to smash it over Pope into the corner of the net.
