Ralf Rangnick went with the same side that started in the win over Brentford, as Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford kept their spots on the bench.
The hosts got off to a lively start and were rewarded with the opening goal on 15 minutes when Moises Caicedo picked up a loose ball outside the box and drilled a strike into the bottom corner.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, showed no signs of recovering from the slow start as they struggled to carve out any openings at Robert Sanchez's goal.
Brighton were nearly gifted a second goal before the break when Raphael Varane's error allowed Danny Welbeck to slip in, but the former United striker lobbed the ball over the crossbar.
Rangnick responded with a double change at the start of the second half, as Edinson Cavani and Fred replaced Matic and Anthony Elanga.
However, it was Brighton who got the next goal three minutes after the break as United's failure to deal with a long throw allowed Trossard to tee up Marc Cucurella, who rifled the ball beyond David de Gea.
Brighton went on to bag a third goal in the 57th minute as Pascal Gross collected a pass from Trossard before skipping past one challenge to slot past an advancing De Gea.
It got worse for United two minutes later when Brighton got a fourth goal when Diogo Dalot's clearance hit Trossard and sailed into the back of the net, with VAR approving the strike amid concerns of handball.
Rangnick responded by throwing on Maguire for Mata with 20 minutes left on the clock, as the visitors looked to close up the defence against a hungry Brighton attack.
United did not have a flurry of chances in the second half, with Cavani going closest with a near post header that forced Sanchez into a fine save.
