Manchester United claimed a second consecutive win on their pre-season tour of Australia after recording a comfortable victory over old rivals Leeds United.
Result: Manchester United 4-0 Leeds United
Date: Wednesday, 17 July 2019
Venue: Optus Stadium, Perth, Australia
The most notable news coming from the United camp ahead of this friendly was the continued absence of Romelu Lukaku, who has been linked with a transfer to Inter Milan, while Juan Mata was handed the captain's armband.
The Red Devils got off to the perfect start, taking the lead in the opening 10 minutes. Paul Pogba's perfectly-weighted pass found Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right, and the new signing squared for Mason Greenwood to slot the ball home.
Leeds slowly found their feet and almost grabbed an equaliser through Patrick Bamford, but the striker was denied by a smart save from Sergio Romero. They were made to rue that miss just minutes later as Marcus Rashford scored a fine solo effort to double United's lead.
The Manchester club then had to absorb increasing pressure as they sat deep to preserve their lead, but nearly added a third just before the break. A quick counter-attack saw Rashford play Daniel James in on goal, but the pacy Welshman's effort clipped the outside of Leeds' post and went wide. The teams went into the break with the score 2-0 at half-time.
Man United made 11 changes for the start of the second-half, and then extended their lead in the 51st minute. Andreas Pereira's corner found Phil Jones unmarked in the box and the centre-back headed home from close range.
Things went from bad to worse for Leeds with just over 20 minutes left to play when Liam Cooper fouled Tahith Chong in the box. Anthony Martial stepped up to take the penalty and duly converted from the spot.
Martial's goal put the tie beyond any doubt and United were content to see out the remainder of the match to claim a comfortable 4-0 victory.
Manchester United's next pre-season friendly is against Inter Milan on Saturday, 20 July.
