African superstar Riyad Mahrez could soon be overtaken as Manchester City's record signing, with Pep Guardiola having reportedly earmarked a Spain midfielder, said to be valued at €70 million (R1.1 billion), as Fernandinho's long-term replacement.
However, the Rojiblancos are said to be unwilling to allow the 22-year-old to leave the club for anything less than his €70 million release clause.
As a result, City will have to fork out more than they did for club-record signing Mahrez, who joined from Leicester City in July 2018.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Manchester club has been monitoring Rodri's progress with keen interest over the past few months, and are "laying the groundwork for a move" in the hope of securing his services before pre-season kicks off in early July.
City are also said to be keeping a close eye on Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, but Rodri is said to be the Citizens' preferred option for the position, with Fernandinho on the wrong side of 30.
