Pep Mocks Liverpool

After Manchester City strengthened their grip on the Premier League title with a 5-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday, Pep Guardiola seemingly took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on Liverpool's Premier League legacy.

Following their UEFA Champions League collapse last week, City returned to league matters as they looked to take advantage of Jurgen Klopp's men dropping points against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The reigning league champions went on to further extend their lead at the top of the table as they came out victors over the Magpies on Sunday courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling (two), Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden.

After the game, the Spaniard took it upon himself to have a dig at the team that is looking to dethrone his City side.

"Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone, of course because Liverpool has an incredible history behind in European competition – not in Premier Leagues, because they've won one in 30 years – but it's not a problem at all," Guardiola told beIN SPORTs.

"The situation is what it is. We need to do nine points or maybe six right now, it depends what happens in the next two games in terms of goal difference, but now Wednesday is the real, real final for us.

"We are going to try to win there. Our destiny is in our hands and this is important. We have to look at ourselves. With one point or three points, nothing’s changed. We have to do it."

The Reds may still harbour ambitions of claiming an unprecedented quadruple, but that dream suffered a massive blow when they drew 1-1 at Anfield against Spurs on the weekend.

They have already won the Carabao Cup this season, and are in the finals of both the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, but reclaiming the league title from City will perhaps prove a tall order for Klopp's men, with the blue half of Manchester having lost one league game in their past 10, winning seven of those matches.
