The 29-year-old was close to joining Pep Guardiola's Manchester City on deadline day in August before the deal broke down, and City appeared to be the frontrunners for his signature in January again.
However, Jose Mourinho's United eventually hijacked the deal in the last minute and have now announced their signing of the Chilean.
Sanchez, whose contract with Arsenal was set to expire in June 2018, scored 80 goals and assisted another 46 strikes in 166 appearances for the Gunners.
The Chilean becomes the highest paid Premier League player, as reported by the Daily Mail, pocketing £450 000 (R5.9 million) – after deductions – a week at Old Trafford.
