With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip currently injured, the Reds have been forced to use Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Nathan Philips in central defence in recent weeks.
However, on deadline day, the club bolstered its defensive department with the signing of centre-back Ozan Kabak on loan, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Before that, though, Ben Davies was announced as the club's first deadline-day signing, moving to Anfield from Preston North End.
He has joined the Reds on a long-term contract for a fee of about £2 million (R41 million), while Sepp van den Berg went the other way on a six-month loan as part of the deal.
Late in the night, Liverpool also confirmed the departure of Japan international Takumi Minamino, who has joined Southampton on loan until the end of the campaign.
