The German tactician was reportedly a target for the Blues after Frank Lampard was sacked in December 2020, but he turned it down as it was only for four months.
While Rangnick's role as manager is only for the rest of the season, he is expected to take on a consultancy role with the Red Devils after the campaign.
“At the time, when Chelsea contacted me, they only spoke about the possibility of four months and no prospective of further than that,” Rangnick said at his press conference, as per Sky Sports.
“Here [at Man Utd], we are talking about six and a half months and a two year advisory role.
“If a club like Manchester United contacts you, you cannot possibly turn it down.”
