Michael Owen has made the stunning claim that Sadio Mane might not have gone down after contact in the box in their 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League as Mohamed Salah would have had the chance to score another penalty.
The Reds were defeated by Thomas Tuchel’s Blues at Anfield on Thursday night in the Premier League, which was their fifth straight home loss.
During the clash, many believed Mane had a chance to go to ground in Chelsea’s penalty area but instead stayed on his feet as he tried to find a path to goal.
Speaking after the game, ex-EPL striker Owen said he wondered whether the Senegalese superstar did not aim to win a penalty as it would have gifted Salah yet another opportunity to score from the spot.
"There was an occasion in the first half where every single Liverpool fan in the world probably thought ‘Penalty!’ – I couldn’t believe he didn’t go down," he said on Optus Sport.
"I’m not advocating he does, (but) normally you see attacking players (go down)… I just wonder whether he is thinking, 'Hang on a minute, I’m going to score, because if I don’t stand on my feet Mo Salah is going to get another penalty'.
"We all know how competitive attacking players are. We all know how selfish, in a way, strikers are. These players have been going for the Golden Boot the last couple of seasons."
Salah has scored 17 goals league goals this season for Liverpool so far, while Mane has found the back of the net on just seven occasions.
