The Norwegian has made the most of his chance as interim United boss, winning all of his seven games in charge so far.
While Mauricio Pochettino is believed to remain the club's favourite to become Mourinho's long-term successor, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is said to be unwilling to let the Argentine coach go.
As a consequence, Solskjaer could reportedly be given a chance permanently if he continues to impress, and, as such, the Daily Express recently analysed which players he could attempt to bring to Old Trafford, and which stars could be axed.
It is believed the 45-year-old would continue to look for young stars, with Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs de Ligt and PSV Eindhoven winger Hirving Lozano suggested to be high on his wish list.
Kylian Mbappe would be the Norwegian's superstar target, but he would only become an option if United qualify for UEFA Champions League football next season. In addition, the French wonderkid's transfer would be a tricky operation, with Real Madrid reportedly also interested in his services.
Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku could leave the club if he is not guaranteed more game time. Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan have all been linked with the Belgian.
Club captain Antonio Valencia could also depart Old Trafford, with Inter Milan rumoured to be keen on the 33-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
In addition, central midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Fred, who seem to be out of favour under Solskjaer, could be sold too.
