The Red Devils have signed three players in this window, but it seems only one of them will improve Mourinho's starting XI. Midfielder Fred is United's most expensive arrival so far, with the English giants paying Shakhtar Donetsk €59 million (R911 million) for the midfielder's services.
Right-back Diogo Dalot came in at a cost of €22 million (R340 million) from FC Porto, but was brought in as back-up for Antonio Valencia, while United paid €1.7 million (R26 million) to Stoke City for Lee Grant, who will be the new third-choice shot-stopper at the club.
Meanwhile, United's most expensive sale was Daley Blind, who joined Ajax Amsterdam for €16 million (R247 million), while Sam Johnstone was the only other sale after moving to West Bromwich Albion for €7.35 million (R114 million).
Mourinho and United vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who is in charge of transfers, only have a day left to bring more new faces to Old Trafford. Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld has been heavily linked with the club but reports on his potential arrival have gone quiet.
Leicester City's Harry Maguire, Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng and FC Barcelona's Yerry Mina are other centre-backs who have been linked with a move to United, although none of them will seemingly end up at the club.
Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic and Chelsea's Willian were understood to be on United's radar to improve the right-wing position earlier in the window. However, at this stage, the rumours have cooled and it remains to be seen whether or not any of Mourinho's transfer targets will still be acquired.
United's transfer business so far:
In: Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk), Diogo Dalot (FC Porto), Lee Grant (Stoke City)
Out: Daley Blind (Ajax Amsterdam), Sam Johnstone (West Bromwich Albion), Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Scunthorpe, loan), Axel Tuanzebe (Aston Villa, loan), Joel Pereira (Vitoria Setubal, loan), Michael Carrick (retired)
