The 27-year-old is believed to have been on Real's radar since 2015, the year his move to the Spanish giants failed on transfer deadline day in August.
De Gea's rise to the top as one of football's best shot-stoppers has seen Los Blancos remain interested in his services, despite manager Jose Mourinho's plans to keep the player in England.
In order to do so, United are reportedly willing to offer the former Atletico Madrid man a new contract that would take his weekly wage to £350 000 (R5.8 million), according to The Sun.
As per the English publication, De Gea is expected to sign a new deal before he heads to Russia, where he will represent Spain at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The player is reportedly earning £200 000 (R3.3 million) a week at the moment, which makes him the club's fourth highest paid star.
De Gea has played 38 matches so far for United this season, keeping 20 clean sheets along the way.
