Manchester United Star Denies Spitting On Manchester City Badge
A Manchester United star has denied claims suggesting that he deliberately spat on a Manchester City badge during his side's 3-2 win at the Etihad on Saturday.
At the end of the first half of the match, television footage appeared to show midfielder Ander Herrera spitting on a large Citizens badge on the floor at the entrance to the tunnel at the club's home ground.
The Red Devils were 2-0 down at the time, and it was understood that City officials thought the player had done it on purpose.
A United spokesperson told members of the media on Monday that the Spaniard did not pay any attention to crest as he was making his way off the pitch.
"Ander has seen footage of the incident and is mortified at any suggestion his actions were deliberate," he told the BBC.
"It was entirely accidental and there was no intent whatsoever."
Later in the afternoon, the former Athletic Bilbao star took to Instagram to strongly deny claims he had deliberately spat on the badge.
"Stop talking s***. I will always fight for my club's badge, but I always respect every other club crest too. Don't forget, I have friends who are City fans. #endofthestory," Herrera wrote on Instagram.
Although the Spaniard will not be punished for the incident, the FA will, however, fine City an automatic £25 000 (R425 000) after they picked up six yellow cards in the match.
