The Red Devils are currently in 14th position in the Premier League after opening their domestic campaign with three wins and three defeats in their first seven games of the season.
United also struggled in the most recent transfer window, when they failed to sign their top target Jadon Sancho, while only two high-profile players left Old Trafford.
As a consequence, the Premier League giants have 31 players on their books, and want to get rid of three of them in January, according to Manchester Evening News.
With Phil Jones, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo seemingly not in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans, the club is now looking to sell them in January.
Both Romero and Rojo's contracts expire in June 2021, which means the January window will be the club's last chance to cash in on them.
United do have the option to extend their deals, but this would likely cause a public outcry if they decided to do so with two players who were not even registered for the club's 2020/21 UEFA Champions League squad.
Rojo has not featured for United since 10 November 2019, while Jones has not played for the club since 26 January, and Romero has been downgraded to third-choice goalkeeper for the Red Devils.
Meanwhile, Timothy Fosu-Mensah's future remains uncertain with his contract also expiring at the end of this season, while Odion Ighalo is expected to return to his parent club Shanghai Shenhua when his loan deal finishes at the end of January.
