Rooney, who is currently player and caretaker manager of Championship side Derby County, announced the news via social media.
He posted an image of himself alongside his eldest son Kai and wife Coleen, captioned: "Proud day. Kai signing for Manchester United. Keep up the hard work son."
Kai initially signed for Manchester City's youth academy in 2016, before Rooney's move to the Major League Soccer with DC United ended his son's stint with United's rivals.
However, Kai has now joined the club his father spent a glittering 13 years at, scoring 253 goals in 559 appearances and lifting 17 trophies.
