‘Manchester United Boss Jose Mourinho Dropping Paul Pogba Was Smart’
Reports suggested that Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba had a fall-out after the Portuguese dropped the club’s record signing recently, but a former Manchester United defender now explained why the coach's decision was smart.
Pogba was substituted early in the defeats against Tottenham and Newcastle and started the recent games against Huddersfield and Sevilla on the bench.
While reports suggested Mourinho and Pogba had clashed, the United manager insisted that there was no problem between himself and the player, and his decision was based purely on the Frenchman’s dip in form.
Mourinho now received backing by former Red Devils’ defender Mikael Silvestre, who insisted the Portuguese handled the situation very well.
"Because of the transfer price tag and where he's been before, coming from Juve, we've expected him to be the talisman, to be 'Mr 100 Per Cent', to be fit all the time and to win games for United," he told Sports Tonight on Dubai Eye 103.8.
"On some occasions, he's failed, he's failed (to meet) the expectations. That's why there's a question mark and that's why he was put aside by Jose Mourinho. I think that was very smart from Jose, especially the way he's handled it.
"You know it's clear that Paul hasn't played well for us and that's why he's not starting the games and that's the end of story. At least everybody knows the reason why it's clear.
"There is no misunderstanding, there is no 'maybe Pogba is finished with United', that wasn't the case. He was just not performing at the level everybody is expecting."
Pogba has since started United’s last two games, a 2-1 over Chelsea and their latest 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace. Overall, he has made 26 appearances this season, scoring three goals and assisting in another 10.
