United started the match in positive fashion, earning themselves a few early corners and attempting a shot at goal after four minutes through Scott McTominay.

Alexis Sanchez forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma nine minutes into the tie with a long-range free-kick, but the goalkeeper was unable to stop his strike moments later.

The Chilean was played through by Spanish playmaker Juan Mata in the 12th minute, timing his run perfectly before neatly tucking the ball into the goal to see United deservedly go ahead.

Their lead did not last long, however, with Milan finding their equaliser just three minutes later. Former Liverpool winger Suso was well picked out by the experienced Leonardo Bonucci before controlling the ball and calmly finishing past new United goalkeeper Lee Grant.

The rest of the half saw Mata and Sanchez continue to link up coherently, while Red Devils midfielder Ander Herrera also grew into the game as the match went on. The teams went into the break with the score at 1-1.

Milan had a great chance to score 55 minutes into the clash, when Suso played young Italian striker Patrick Cutrone through on goal, but he hit his shot wide.

Some sting was taken out of the match due to both sides making several substitutions, and the game eventually ending in a draw. It would now be penalties that decided this pre-season encounter.

United eventually won 9-8 in an unbelievable penalty shootout, with Franck Kessie missing from his second spot-kick to hand Mourinho's side the victory.

Other ICC results:

Juventus 2-0 Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Benfica (3-4 on penalties)

Manchester City 1-2 Liverpool

Roma 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur
