Liverpool are reportedly hoping Senegal superstar Sadio Mane can help persuade a Manchester City target to head to Anfield instead.
The Citizens have been heavily linked with a move for Lions of Teranga defender Kalidou Koulibaly throughout the current transfer window, and it has been claimed that he has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side.
With the centre-back being regarded as one of the top defenders in Europe's major leagues, Napoli are not budging on their high valuation of the player.
Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the Senegalese, but the high price tag remains a problem for the French giants and City.
However, according to The Sun, reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are monitoring the situation, and are actively looking to hijack any deal, with the hope being that Mane can help persuade his countryman to move to Anfield.
The 2019 African Footballer of the Year has previously spoken of his admiration for his international teammate, having been quoted in July as saying: "Kalidou Koulibaly is an excellent defender, and one of the world's best in his position.
"I would be very happy to play alongside him at club level, as I have known him for years."
Napoli are understood to be holding out for a fee of £70 million (R1.5 billion) for the centre-back.
