Liverpool’s new Brazilian star has revealed the truth around the reports that were linking him with a move to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
The 24-year-old, Fabinho, was expected to sign for the Old Trafford club in this transfer window but opted for the Reds instead, after Monaco accepted a bid estimated to be worth £44 million (R792 million).
Despite the press suggesting otherwise, the midfielder insisted that he was never close to signing for the Red Devils and he jumped at the chance to join the Merseyside club.
“I was sad to leave Monaco, a club that gave me a lot of great moments, but in football sometimes you need new challenges, and I thought it was time to move on.
“As soon as Liverpool declared their interest in signing me, it was a simple decision to make. A club with Liverpool’s history wants you? Come on, you just pack your bags and go. It will be an honour to wear the famous red shirt.
“I was never close to signing for Manchester United, no. I heard things said about it, but the truth is it was never a definite possibility.
“I won’t deny there were a few conversations about my situation with Monaco, but there was never an official offer from United.”
Fabinho is expected to replace Emre Can in midfield this season, who has left for Serie A giants Juventus.
