Jose Mourinho: Why Anthony Martial Was Absent From Manchester United's Final Premier League Game
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed why France international Anthony Martial did not make Manchester United's squad on the final matchday of the Premier League season.
The 22-year-old was reportedly promised by his manager that he would start the game against Watford on Sunday, but was seen by MUTV, United's official television station, leaving the ground shortly before kick-off.
After the Red Devils' 1-0 win over the Hornets, Mourinho was asked why Martial did not feature in the squad, and if the player's absence was a sign that his future at Old Trafford is under threat.
"It is not true, he is injured," Mourinho insisted, as quoted by the Daily Telegraph.
"He was injured in the Friday training session, yesterday he could not train. He had treatment in the morning at the training ground, and he stayed away.
"I do not know if he will be fit for the (FA Cup) final. I know Romelu Lukaku will be back on Tuesday, and we have to see but Anthony, I have no more."
Martial made 44 appearances for the Red Devils this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further nine strikes across all competitions.
