The Red Devils ended the season a whopping 19 points behind Pep Guardiola's Citizens, and also lost out on the FA Cup as they went down 1-0 to Chelsea in the final at Wembley.
According to the Daily Mirror, the Portuguese tactician is planning on spending about £250 million (R4.31 billion) in this window as he plans a squad overhaul for next season.
Mourinho has apparently told club executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he will need a minimum of five new players if he is expected to close the gap on City at the top of the table.
In defence, the former Chelsea boss is apparently eyeing Tottenham Hotspur centre back Toby Alderweireld and Juventus wing-back Alex Sandro, while, in midfield he is also said to be looking at Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, Napoli's Jorginho and Nice's Jean Michael Seri.
Out-of-favour Los Blancos winger Gareth Bale has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford next season, according to the Daily Mirror, but some believe Brazilian attacker Willian may be Mourinho's preferred option for the right wing role.
With the Red Devils having ended up so far behind their city rivals in the 2017/18 league title race, it has believed the club's board will not be happy with Mourinho if similar happens in the 2018/19 campaign.
