Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he is not in the happiest of moods as he has failed to bring in players he wanted for the upcoming season. This situation is not a new one for the Portuguese tactician – here is a starting XI of stars who snubbed the manager in the past.

In 2013, then Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy was said to have rejected a chance to play under the former Chelsea boss. The 31-year-old, who now plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers, was approached by Mourinho to become Petr Cech's understudy at Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Portuguese manager has seen three high-profile defenders push his advancements aside in the past three years. In 2015, during his second stint with the Blues, Mourinho wanted to shore up his backline with youth, but failed to secure the services of John Stones from Everton, while in 2016, the then United boss was snubbed by Mats Hummels and Raphael Varane, who reportedly did not want to play for a team that was not playing UEFA Champions League football.

The midfield is made up of five stars, and nobody has snubbed Mourinho more than Liverpool great Steven Gerrard. According to the Daily Mirror, the former England international rejected the Portuguese boss on "five or six" occasions, preferring to stay with the Merseyside club. Other players who can play in midfield who have also reportedly said no to the former Inter Milan coach are Wayne Rooney, N'Golo Kante, Gareth Bale, and, more recently, Willian.

In the 2017/18 campaign, two strikers snubbed Mourinho, which was surprising for some. The Red Devils manager failed to land Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid and Alvaro Morata from 13-time European champions Real Madrid.
