Man Utd Stars 'Shaken' By Greenwood Drama
The England international was denied a deadline-day move after Mason Greenwood was arrested and suspended until further notice by the club.
Lingard, 29, was believed to be hoping for a change of scenery in the January transfer window as he has failed to get regular game time with the Red Devils so far this season, having made just 14 appearances in all competitions.
In a press conference ahead of United's FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough, Rangnick appeared to suggest that the disappointed Lingard had asked for time off to clear his head, although that is not how the player sees it.
Taking to Twitter to tell his side of the story, the attacking midfielder claimed he was, in fact, told by the club to have a short break.
This is the second time this season a United player has taken to social media to share a different version of events to Rangnick, with Anthony Martial, who has since joined Sevilla on loan, having denied requesting to be left out of a particular match last month.
Lingard was wanted by both Newcastle United and West Ham United in January, but will now see out the remaining months of his deal at Old Trafford before leaving on a free transfer.
Here are six transfers that were completed after deadline day:
