Jose Mourinho famously labelled Arsene Wenger a "specialist in failure", and following Arsenal's loss against Monaco on Wednesday night, was the Chelsea boss right?
In the last four years of the Champions League, Arsene Wenger’s side has failed to progress from the Round of 16, and it’s Mourinho’s comments on the Frenchman that appear to be ringing true.
In those four years, the 65-year-old’s team has been knocked out twice by Bayern Munich, as well as by AC Milan and Barcelona. They now face the possibility of being knocked out by Wenger’s former club, AS Monaco, after their shocking display at home to the French side.
What's most concerning is that Wenger's side always struggles in the first-leg of their Round of 16 clashes. In 2011/12 they lost 4-0 at Milan, the following season Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Bayern in London. The Bavarians triumphed 2-0 in the 2013/14 season, also at the Emirates, before last night's 3-1 shock loss to Monaco. The only first-leg win came against Barcelona in the 2010/11 season, where they won 2-1, only to be knocked out 4-3 on aggregate.
Arsenal’s FA Cup win last season was the Gunners' first trophy in the last nine seasons, and with the players Wenger has had at his disposal, it’s perhaps his tactics that have been questioned most.
Wenger was a great coach 10 years ago, but with football being so different now, perhaps the manager has failed to adapt his style.
Mourinho has recently thrown another punch at Wenger, saying that every manager dreams of having the stability that the Frenchman has, and feels he should be winning more silverware.
With previous league finishes ranging between third and fourth, Gunners fans have been incredibly patient, as it’s been 11 years since Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ team reigned supreme, and went unbeaten for the entire season - winning the league with an 11-point lead.
