After losing the FA Cup final 1-0 to Chelsea at Wembley Stadium a week ago, United's season went from an average one to a bad one.
Despite finishing second in the Premier League table, fans voiced their frustration at the pragmatic football United played for most parts of the campaign, while their UEFA Champions League run ended abruptly with a round-of-16 loss to Sevilla.
Mourinho is said to be targeting a number of players in the transfer window, with Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred and Besiktas' on-loan star Anderson Talisca reportedly two players he has kept a close eye on, according to the Daily Express and many other publications.
If United are to acquire the services of both players, it is likely that Mourinho would use them as part of his strongest XI almost straight away, but how would United line up?
David de Gea would undoubtedly retain his spot in goals for the Red Devils, with a possible back four of Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Ashely Young in front of him. That, of course, may change if the manager looks to bring in another centre-back and left-back to the club.
Mourinho might be tempted to line up Fred alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in midfield, with the latter being allowed to roam more than the other two.
While Matic would sit in a deeper role, Fred would look to be the link between defence and attack.
The Portuguese boss may then opt to play Alexis Sanchez on the left, Talisca on the right and striker Romelu Lukaku down the middle.
Man Utd's First Signing For Next Season Revealed?
While Anthony Martial is linked with a move away from United, Marcus Rashford might need to develop more if he is to start in Mourinho's strongest team.
