'Kane Foolish & Naive For Relying On Gentlemen's Agreement'

A former Chelsea star feels Harry Kane was foolish and naive to believe he would able to leave Tottenham Hotspur after a gentlemen's agreement with the chairman.

The England international did not turn up for pre-season training on both Monday and Tuesday as he reportedly looks to secure a move to Manchester City.

There were claims that there was a gentlemen's agreement between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and Kane that would allow the player to leave, but former Blues midfielder Andy Townsend says the striker should not have relied on such a handshake.

"I think if Harry is relying on a gentlemen's agreement with someone who is notoriously difficult to look in the eye, apparently, then I think he's been foolish and a bit naive," Townsend told talkSPORT.

"To do his last contract and rely and trust on a handshake of somebody [Levy] who has the reputation of being the toughest out there to deal with, then it's naive from Harry.

"When I was a young kid at Southampton, Lawrie McMenemy signed me. I'd come from non-league and he said you get in the first team and play for me, I'll give you a contract.

"I was on a pittance walking into that dressing room from non-league and I got into the team that season, by which time Lawrie McMenemy had left and Chris Nicholl had come in.

"When I went to see Chris Nicholl and said Lawrie had told me this, he said, 'Who are you? I don't even know who you are. You're alright, but I need to see a lot more before you get a new deal out of me.'"
