The biggest scalp of the fourth round was Liverpool's exit at the hands of rivals Manchester United after Bruno Fernandes' late winner to seal a 3-2 win for the Red Devils.
Arsenal were also knocked out of the competition following their 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
Brighton made it to the next round after beating Blackpool 2-1 – a game in which Tau was selected for the starting XI, but was substituted after 61 minutes.
The South African and his side will now face an in-form Leicester City in what promises to be a tricky fixture for the Seagulls.
