It has reportedly been revealed who the first big signing of Erik ten Hag's reign as Manchester United manager will be.
Report: Man Utd's Transfer Strategy For Ten Hag Revealed
According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is likely to join the Red Devils at the end of the season.
While the Dutchman is highly rated in LaLiga and by his coach Xavi Hernandez, the Spanish club's dire financial situation is expected to see a high-profile player leave in the next transfer window for a significant fee.
It is claimed the 25-year-old's signature could be secured for about €80 million (R1.3 billion), with the Blaugrana reportedly worried that delaying his sale would see his value decrease.
Although Romero is sure De Jong will sign for the struggling 20-time English champions, perhaps even before the end of the month, other Spanish outlets have suggested that Xavi is yet to give his approval to the departure operation.
Xavi has, on many occasions, insisted that De Jong is key to his plans, but he would not be the first player sacrificed due to the team's poor economic standing. In 2021, Lionel Messi was told he would not be offered a new contract as his wage package exceeded what the club was capable of matching.
For United, meanwhile, his arrival would be the start of what fans hope is a promising first transfer window for Ten Hag, who has previously managed De Jong in the Netherlands.
Since his exit from Ajax Amsterdam in 2019, De Jong has made 138 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish giants and contributed to 30 goals.
