At the weekend, it was confirmed that the former Cape Town City and AmaZulu boss has been made a striker coach at the Red Devils, the club he grew up supporting and scored a brace against in the UEFA Champions League 18 years ago.
The appointment seemed to come as a surprise to South African football fans, but Ten Hag is confident McCarthy will bring a "different voice" to his coaching staff.
"There was still one place in our coaching staff that I wanted to fill," he told MUTV.
"Someone with a different voice and Benni is that one.
"He has experience as a manager. He was a coach in the professional level and he was a former striker, a really successful striker as well."
The Dutchman added that McCarthy will help the team's attacking organisation.
"He will focus on the positioning and attacking," he added.
"I'm not saying only the strikers, but also the integration from the fullbacks and midfielders. Our way of play has to be dynamic."

McCarthy was pitch-side for United's 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, where he discussed his decision to join Ten Hag's project in England.
