English Premier League
Result: Manchester United 3-1 Liverpool
Date: 12 September 2015
Venue: Old Trafford
Anthony Martial scored on his Manchester United debut, as the Red Devils secured a 3-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Louis Van Gaal handed David De Gea his first start of the season, while Wayne Rooney missed out with a hamstring injury. While Brendan Rodgers was without the suspended Philippe Coutinho.
The home side nearly broke the deadlock after just six minutes when Simon Mignolet gave the ball away on the edge of the box, however Maroune Fellaini failed to put his effort on target.
That proved to be the only chance from either side in the opening 45 minutes, which failed to live up to expectations.
United eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the break as Juan Mata picked out Daley Blind on the edge of the area and the Dutchman placed the ball into the far corner.
David De Gea had to be at his best in the 56th minute, as he pulled off a fine save to keep out Danny Ings' left-footed volley.
Blind then came to United's rescue in the 64th minute, as the Dutchman did well to clear Martin Skrtel's glancing header off the line.
Van Gaal's men were presented with a chance to extend their lead in the 70th minute from the penalty, when Ander Herrera was brought down by Joe Gomez and the Spaniard stepped to convert from 12-yards out.
The visitors nearly reduced the deficit in the 75th minute when James Milner picked Christian Benteke in the box, however the Belgian's header sailed just over the crossbar.
Benteke was not to be denied in the 84th minute as the Liverpool striker scored a sublime over-head kick, which left De Gea with no chance.
However, big money signing Anthony Martial marked his debut with a goal in the 87th minute, the Frenchman weaved his way into the box, before side-footing into the far corner.
The win sees Louis Van Gaal's side move up to second in the Premier League standings, while Liverpool remain in ninth minute.
