United Down Sunderland To Go Top

English Premier League

Result: Manchester United 3-0 Sunderland

Date: 26 September 2015

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United moved to the top of the English Premier League standings after they defeated Sunderland 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The first real opening of the match arrived in the 15th minute when Juan Mata received the ball on the edge of the box, before seeing his effort deflect just wide of the mark.

David De Gea was then called to action in the 23rd minute when, as he did well to keep out Jermain Lens' snapshot.

Memphis Depay nearly broke the deadlock two minutes when he was afforded too much time from 25-yards but his stinging effort was tipped over the crossbar by Costel Pantilimon.

Louis Van Gaal's side eventually took the lead on the stroke of halftime when Daley Blind's superb pass picked out Mata, who in turn teed up Memphis for the easiest of tap-ins.

The hosts doubled their advantage 38 seconds into the second half when Anthony Martial did well to skip past Younnes Kaboul to tee up Wayne Rooney for his first Premier League goal of the season.

Sunderland nearly reduced the deficit in the 54th minute but De Gea was on hand to stick out his foot to deny Toivonen from point-blank range.

The hosts were presented with a chance to grab a third goal in the 67th when Martial played Memphis through on goal but the Dutchman fired his effort straight at Pantilimon.

Martial then had a chance get his name on the score-sheet when he rose well to meet Antonio Valencia's cross, however the Frenchman's sailed just over the crossbar.

The Red Devils continued to search for goals as the half went on, as Pantilimon denied Mata from the edge of the area with a superb low save.

Van Gaal's men managed to grab add a third goal in the 89th minute when Ashley Young picked out Mata at the back post and the Spaniard blasted into the roof of the net.

The Red Devils now top the league standings, while Sunderland remain rooted to the bottom and are yet to register a victory.
